A trip out to Windsor and Windsor Castle is an absolute must for anyone visiting the London area. Windsor Castle is the Queen’s main residence and once you see it, you’ll know why! One of our favorite days of our entire 6 weeks in England was spent in this beautiful town.

As far as castles go, Windsor is definitely the quintessential model – think Game of Thrones mixed with The Queen and there you have it…

Getting There

Getting to Windsor from Central London is easy, whether you have a rental car or are taking public transportation. We would recommend taking the train in since then you won’t have to worry about parking your rental car upon arrival. Windsor can get really busy on the weekends.

To take the train from Central London, you have 2 options. The quickest way is to take the train from Paddington to Windsor with one change at Slough. This will take you to the main station at Windsor and the closest one to the Castle. Or if you prefer not to make a change, there is a train from Waterloo to Windsor that takes around an hour. This train ends at Windsor and Eton station which is a little further away from the Castle – not too far, but it is a mostly uphill walk. (Tip: A return train ticket to Windsor is included with your London Pass, so definitely take advantage if you have one)

What to Do

Obviously plan to spend plenty of time exploring the castle itself – we were there for around 3-4 hours. You can definitely get through it quicker, but we wanted to do all the extras like visit the beautiful moat garden and take our time walking through the Chapel. An audio guide comes free with your entrance ticket (£20 or included with your London Pass)

Cathedral Windsor Castle

Both Windsor and its neighboring town Eton are so picturesque. Even without the Castle in the city center, it would be worth a visit. Spend some time walking around, people watching and shopping at the many amazing tailors and antique shops. Even if you’re not in the shopping mood, be sure to look in the shop windows and check out the amazing custom uniforms for the famous boy’s school. It’s literally something you would see in Harry Potter, complete with capes and ties. Some of the most famous Eton College alumnae include Prince Harry, Prince William, George Orwell, Hugh Grant, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne and Bear Grylls.

You can also take a stroll along the Thames and stop in one of the many pubs for a pint.

Where to Eat

The George Inn and Pub is a great place to grab a bite. We were lucky enough to be there on “Fizzy Fridays” where bottles of bubbly are only £15! The food was delicious. We ordered oysters, baked camembert, fish and chips and cottage pie to share (between 3 of us) and thoroughly enjoyed it all. Definitely stop by! They also have a nice garden open in the summer and when the sun’s shining it’s the perfect place.
